Reworking the Office Closet

Check out my new YouTube Channel here for my newest video that walks you through Reworking the Office Closet.

That’s the after, folks I realize that since I’m a professional organizer people tend to think that I don’t have messy closets. They would be wrong. We’ll call this the before picture…

This is the place where things went to never be looked at again. Literally. We just shut the door and tried to forget about it. Until one day, I decided enough was enough. Here’s how I worked through this office closet rework.

STEP 1: I started by taking every single thing out of there and spread it out on the floor.

I made a trash pile and then organized everything else in groups of like items. Then we discussed how we actually wanted to use this closet – we realized we wanted it to be mostly office items and filing. But we also needed to house the random items that had been living in there. And we needed some bins stat!

STEP 2: I measured our shelves – the width + depth + height so I knew how much space I had for bins.

Then the fun part…shopping for bins! You can Click Here to checkout some of my favorite organizing bins + products (including the ones in this organize). Think through how many categories of items you have and how many different bins you will need to fit in the space for each of them.

STEP 3: Start by putting empty containers in the closet.

Don’t be the person that removes all the tags, fills the bins and then finds out they don’t fit! That’s no fun. Leave the tags ON and try them in the closet first. Make adjustments and then you are ready to start organizing.

STEP 4: Yay, it’s organizing time!

Since we had a lot of different types of categories in the closet, I chose these black Amazon magazine files to keep them all contained. We had some miscellaneous boxes we needed to still keep for various reasons but I wanted to hide them. So these cute gray bins from IKEA were perfect.

We wanted to up our game and be more responsible adults – so we created a section of our closet where we house our will + personal files with what accounts we have for insurance + investments and all the fun adult things. I found these two gold and white file boxes at Home Goods. The gray bin is from IKEA.

And last, but not least, were all the random things that we had stuffed in the closet….birthday party supplies and craft things that I don’t want my kids getting into. So we got a couple of my favorite IKEA Drona bins and put these Container Store clips on them with a label and voila!

STEP 5: Add the labels.

I feel like this point is a little anti-climactic considering I already showed you the pictures with the labels. But DO NOT skip this step. Labels will help you and the other people in your home put things back in the right places.

What label maker do you use? I was hoping you would ask. For the magazine files I just used this basic label maker. For the IKEA Drona bins I made my own labels on my Cricut machine. But if fancier fonts are what you are looking for, I’m in love with this label maker.

What now?!

There you have it! An office closet that went from messy to magnificent! Do you have a closet that has been nagging you? I would love to help you get a handle on your space and create better systems to keep it organized in the future.
