3 Tips for Organizing Holiday Decor

The fun of the holidays has ended, and now you are dreading the cleanup process. Ah yes, I’ve been there. So today I want to make it just a little bit easier on you with 3 tips for organizing holiday decor, and doing it the RIGHT way. I promise, you will thank yourself a year from now.

A few, simple places to focus your energy [and possibly some new organizing product] and you’ll be set to go! Let’s do this.

Wrangle Your Lights

Those strands of lights can be a big pain in the you know what – so it’s time for YOU to take control!

  1. Roll + secure each strand so you avoid one big heap of tangled mess.

At our house, we use these rolling organizers to keep our lights untangled.

2. Label based on where each strand will go next year

As you wrangle those light strands, be sure and label them so you know where that strand goes – it can be as simple as a piece of masking tape and a sharpie! Or get some simple labels like these to write on.

3. Take that extra step, and if any aren’t working fully, toss them now and buy a new one on sale [because this is the cheapest time of year to buy].

Protect Your Ornaments

If you want your ornaments to last, you’ve got to protect them!

  1. Utilize an organizing bin that fits your ornament sizes snugly.

First, measure your largest ornament so you know what size it needs to fit. There are TONS of organizers out there, and the most important things to consider are…

2. Have an ornament bin for each tree [and label accordingly] so hanging next year is a cinch.

At our house, we have our main tree, a medium tree for upstairs, and then a couple mini kids trees for their bedrooms. So I have an ornament bin for our main tree, and then a separate bin for the upstairs trees. That makes it SO much easier when we go to decorate each year, and keeps the kids’ hands away from our breakable downstairs ornaments.

3. If you see any damaged ornaments or ones you no longer like, toss or donate them now.

Again, do the work now since it’s fresh in your mind – what’s broken? what’s no longer my style? Get em out of your house. With my decor…if I haven’t used it in 2 years, I probably won’t. OR…it should be moved to a keepsake bin if it is special but no longer being displayed.

Store Larger Decor

Wanna know some of my tricks for the larger holiday decor?

1. Protect larger stems in short and deep under bed bins like this one – they stack AND are on wheels.

2. Store trees in original boxes or invest in inexpensive tree bags like this one that fits up to a 7.5 ft tree. This is one of the only times I like to keep original boxes in my home!

3. Protect wreaths and/or garland in bags like this one [measure your wreath width], or containers like this one.

Or… even store them on a storage room wall with simple nails like we do at my house.

4. Store larger decor items in an organizer like this to protect them – or simply wrap each piece in packing paper and store in a labeled tote.
